The National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) discovered more than one billion cubic meters of lost gas in Khozestan province, Pananews reported quoting NIGC official Aliakbar Nekonam as saying

"By installation of advanced ultrasonic flow meters around one billion cubic meters of lost gas was discovered and added to Khozestan gas production," he said.

An ultrasonic flow meter is a type of flow meter that measures the velocity of a liquid or gas (fluid) by using the principle of ultrasound.

The NIGC plans to launch petrochemical units, smart meters, and comprehensive calibration center to discover and later reduce lost gas volumes.

Iran plans to run calibration system in gas industry to discover new gas fields and possible violations. Iran will also install smart meters on gas entrances in cities and villages alongside gas compressor facilities near refineries.

Iran is the world's second largest reserves of gas after Russia and third in oil reserves.
