Kazakhstan, Astana, Nov. 1 / Trend /

The Moynak hydropower plant will be commissioned on Dec.10, 2011, Samruk-Energo Board Chairman Erlan Upushev told journalists.

It should be recalled that Moynak HPP is the third after similar facilities in Switzerland and China, constructed by the method of tunnel water dispersal.

"By introducing Moynak HPP into full capacity - it will take place in spring 2012 - we will get the full independence from the Kyrgyz electricity mainly in peak periods in the south of Kazakhstan," Upushev said.

He recalled that the construction of Moynak HPP began in 1985 on the Charyn River (southern Kazakhstan). Construction is completed almost at 60 percent. In 1992, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, due to the dire situation in the country construction of the facility was suspended. In 2005, work was launched to complete construction of the power plant.

According to Upushev, the main consumers of Moynak HPP will be the southern regions of Kazakhstan and Almaty, where electricity shortages are traditionally covered by exports from Kyrgyzstan.

He said in the future it is planned to construct a full cascade of the HPP on the Charyn River. Feasibility study of construction of Aktogay, Kurtogay, Bestamak HPPs have been already developed.

Moynak HPP is unique in its kind in the technological sense. The distance between the reservoir and control room is more than 9 kilometers. Level difference between these facilities is almost 500 meters.

China International Water and Electric Corporation acts as designer and organizer of work on the construction of diversion tunnel, which assumed "turnkey" commissioning of all the HPP facilities under the contract.

In general, the cost of completion of Moynak HPP construction is estimated at $340 million (loan of Development Bank of Kazakhstan ($50 million) and China Development Bank ($200 million), as well as own funds of Samruk-Energo.
