Azerbaijan, Baku, November 15 / Trend, E. Ismailov /

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) plans to complete gas constructions at the Kulevi terminal before the end of January to start transporting chemicals via the terminal, a source with SOCAR Energy Georgia, which represents SOCAR's interests in Georgia, told Trend on Tuesday.

Works under the project are currently underway, the source noted.

"These constructions are essential to provide transportation of chemicals, particularly, propylene," the source said.

Another source with the SOCAR reported earlier that the project envisioning transportation of chemicals manufactured by production unit Azerkimya via the Kulevi oil terminal near completion.

Azerkimya-manufactured liquid polyethylene and propylene are considered the raw materials to be shipped via the terminal. The production unit is Azerbaijan's biggest producer of chemicals.

The terminal was put into operation in summer 2008. Its total capacity is 10 million tons of oil per year, including three million tons of oil, three million tons of diesel fuel and four million tons of fuel oil.

The terminal can accommodate up to 168 tank cars. The tank farm's total volume is 320,000 cubic meters with the possibility of increasing to 380,000 cubic meters. The port has two berths to load petroleum products in tankers of up to 100,000 tons.

Loading productivity ranges from 1000 to 8000 cubic meters per hour. The railway station, which can simultaneously accommodate up to 180 carriage awaiting discharge of cargo, serves the port. The railway trestle can simultaneously unload 168 carriages.
