Azerbaijan, Baku, November 15 / Trend, E. Ismailov /

Drilling of the main and side well bore of an exploration well at large gas field Absheron in the Azerbaijani national sector of the Caspian will be completed in May, a source with the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) told Trend on Tuesday.

The Absheron PSA shareholders are the SOCAR (40 percent), and France's Total (40 percent) and Gaz De France Suez (20 percent).

The Absheron PSA was signed by SOCAR and Total on February 27, 2009. Later on, Total sold 20 percent of its interest to Gaz De France Suez.

The source said the drilling of the well's main well bore will be restored within days to lead its depth up to 6,900 meters to let open Nadkirmakin suite. "These works will be completed before the end of the year," the source said. The well's depth currently exceeds 6,500 meters.

Once the well's main well bore is drilled, drilling of the well's side well bore will begin and supposedly end next May. The well is drilled using the Heydar Aliyev semi-submersible drilling rig operated by Denmark's Maersk Drilling.

It is planned to drill the side well bore up to 1,500 meters from the depth of 4,000 meters to receive more detailed information of the field.

The discovery of large gas field Absheron in the Azerbaijani national sector of the Caspian was announced this September.

The field's potential reserves are estimated at 350 billion cubic meters of gas and 45 million tons of condensate. Correspondingly, Azerbaijan's proven gas reserves have increased up to 2.55 trillion cubic meters.
