Azerbaijan, Baku, Nov. 18 / Trend E. Ismayilov /

Bos Shelf will begin constructing a new floating drilling rig for SOCAR in 2012, a source on the oil and gas market told Trend on Friday.

"According to the plan of operations, Bos Shelf will begin constructing in 2012," the source said.

The State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) plans to complete construction of a new floating drilling rig in Azerbaijan by late 2014, a source in SOCAR said earlier.

At present, the operations are underway in accordance with the plan to create a new drilling rig. The construction work may begin in June-July next year.
Caspian Drilling Company Ltd (CDC), of which SOCAR has a 92.44 per cent stake, will act as a contractor on behalf of SOCAR while construction will be carried out by BosShelf.
A package of equipment which will be used by around a dozen companies will serve as a base for construction.

Earlier SOCAR made a concerted decision to invest in building a new rig of the last generation, through which it will be possible to drill exploratory and development wells on the various structures to depths of 1,000 metres.

There are many promising assemblies in the Caspian Sea, on which to conduct exploratory drilling. A new rig that can operate in deep water is essential for this purpose.
The construction of this rig costs up to $ 500 million. The cost of the last Heydar Aliyev rig, which was built in the Caspian Sea, hit $ 250 million, SOCAR head Rovnag Abdullayev said.
