Iranians used an average of 1.3 million litres per day less petrol in November and December of this year than they did in the same period last year, Shana News Agency reported.

Despite the addition of 1.5 million cars to the country's roads annually, 1.753 billion litres of petrol was used in November and December of this year compared to 1.792 billion litres last year, about a 2.1 per cent drop.

The average daily petrol consumed this November and December was 58.4 million litres in contrast to 59.7 million litres last year, according to data from the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company (NIOPDC).

The NIOPDC's data shows diesel consumption reached 101 million litres a day in November and December, 10 per cent more than this time in 2010..

Last year, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's government ended petrol subsidies to drive down petrol consumption and save the country money it spent on fuel imports. Iran began to ration petrol two years ago.

The Iranian government pays each citizen $45 a month as compensation for a part of its commodities and energy subsides which were cut in December 2010.
