Azerbaijan, Baku, March 25 /Trend M. Moezzi/

Iran construction of a gas refinery at its joint South Pars oil and gas field has set a new record the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reports the country's oil minister as saying.

Sixty-two percent of the construction on a South Pars gas refinery has been finished in 20 months, said Rostam Ghasemi, Iran's oil minister.

The world record for building a refinery is 52 months. Iran has sped ahead with its work despite international sanctions that have made it hard to get parts and equipment, said Mr. Ghasemi who thanked those foreign companies who have honored their contracts with Iran.

The U.S and EU have ratcheted up sanctions against Iran. They have embargoed Iran's oil industry and the U.S. is pressuring other countries to stop doing business with Iran.

The West's measures are part of an effort to make Iran answer questions about its nuclear program which it says is peaceful and civilian in nature while the U.S. and its allies contend it is not.
