Spanish company to prepare pilot projects in alternative energy for Azerbaijan

The Spanish Alten Group is preparing a feasibility study for pilot projects in Azerbaijan in the framework of the European Commission-funded energy sector reforms program, head of the State Agency for Alternative and Renewable Energy Akim Badalov said at a press conference on Thursday.

The press conference was devoted to the beginning of the second phase of the program on the use of the grant of the European Commission in the amount of 13 million euros to support the program of reforms in the energy sector.

The projects will cover such areas as alternative energy sources like wind power, solar and biomass. In particular, the company is preparing a feasibility study for the construction of hydroelectric power plant on a small river.

Badalov said the cost of work under the tender is estimated at 500.000 euros. "The relevant tenders to select companies that will implement these pilot projects will be announced after completion of the feasibility study" Badalov said.

The program provides the development of the EU Action Plan for the development of alternative energy sources. It is also expected to improve legislation to develop energy efficiency, improved public financial management in this field of statistics in the energy sector.

In recent years, Azerbaijan attaches great importance to the development of alternative and renewable energy sources.

The Azerbaijani government is preparing a national program on the use of alternative and renewable energy sources in Azerbaijan for 2012-2020 and the organisation of work within the framework of this strategy will allow the country to reach 20 per cent share of
renewable energy in total energy consumption by 2020.
