Ukraine relies on direct supplies of Turkmen gas
Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, May 30 / Trend H.Hasanov /
Ukraine relies on direct supplies of Turkmen gas, Ukrainian media reported on Wednesday, referring to Prime Minister Mykola Azarov, who was received in Ashgabat by President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.
The Ukrainian Prime Minister noted that the issue was raised during his meeting with Berdimuhamedov.
"At every meeting with the leadership, of course the question of what for example, changes occur in the position of Russia in this direction are discussed," Azarov said.
Ukraine may obtain access to the resources of Turkmen gas through the Central Asia-Centre (CAC) main gas pipeline which passes through the territory of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Russia and is controlled by the Russian Gazprom Company.
Currently, the CAC does not work at full capacity. Russia under the influence of the global recession has reduced since 2010 the purchase of up to 10 billion cubic meters of gas, which is four times less than in 2008. Experts point out that Gazprom has traditionally bought Turkmen gas for re-export to Europe, including Ukraine.
According to Turkmen government sources, the theme of cooperation in the field of fuel and the energy complex may be raised in Ashgabat on Wednesday during talks between Berdimuhamedov and Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Medvedev.
Turkmenistan has previously stated its readiness to supply the CAC to the same volume, but this issue still remains an open question. At the same time, according to Kyiv, the agreement on a free trade zone of the CIS has an item that provides for equal access to the transport capacity of the CIS countries.
Kyiv recently said that Ukrainian enterprises and companies are willing to participate in the implementation of Turkmenistan important infrastructure projects of national importance, such as main gas pipelines and in particular in the country the 'East - West' and the international on the 'Turkmenistan - Afghanistan - Pakistan - India' (TAPI) route.
