Kazakh Samruk-Energy and Korean Samsung Engineering Company Limited signed an agreement on construction of the first module of the Balkhash thermal (coal) power plant in Kazakhstan, Kazinform reported on Monday with reference to Samruk-Energy.
The plant's capacity will hit 1320 MW.
"This project will allow producing up to 9 billion kWh of additional electricity per year, which will reduce power shortage in Kazakhstan's united energy system and increase the reliability of electricity supply to consumers," the company said.
Samruk-Energy and Korean KEPCO and Samsung Corporation signed an agreement on the construction of the Balkhash thermal power plant in March within Kazakh President's visit to Korea.
On June 18, the Board of Directors of Balkhash thermal power plant - company affiliated to Samruk-Energy has decided to conclude an EPC agreement with Samsung Engineering Company Limited on the construction of the first module of the Balkhash thermal (coal) power station.
The construction is scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of 2012 and to be completed in 2017. The most advanced and environmentally friendly technologies will be used in the project.
Samruk-Energy was established in May 2007 to consolidate state power assets, reconstruct and upgrade existing and construct new generating capacities in Kazakhstan. Samruk-Energy supervises the majority of power plants in Kazakhstan.
