Kazakhstan intends developing alternative energy sources

Kazakhstan intends to seriously get down to the development of alternative energy sources. The question is about the development of solar and wind energy, Kazakh Prime Minister Serik Akhmetov said on Tuesday at the Kazenergy forum.

Kazakhstan intends to seriously get down to the development of alternative energy sources. The question is about the development of solar and wind energy, Kazakh Prime Minister Serik Akhmetov said on Tuesday at the Kazenergy forum.

Electricity generation by renewable energy sources facilities in Kazakhstan in 2011 amounted to 420 million kWh, an increase of 17 million kWh, or four per cent more than in 2010, Industry and New Technologies Ministry of Kazakhstan told Trend earlier.

The potential of renewable energy sources in Kazakhstan is about one trillion kWh per year.

In particular, Kazakhstan's wind energy potential is estimated at 920 billion kWh of electricity per year with a hydropower potential of eight billion kWh. In addition, the country has the resources for the development of solar energy.
