The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) conducts geological work in the frame of the construction of underground gas storage facilities in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, head of SOCAR Rovnag Abdullayev told reporters on Tuesday.
He noted that currently there are employees of drilling department in Nakhchivan.
Abdullayev added that gas storage volumes range from 50 to 200 million cubic meters of gas.
There are underground deposits of salt south to the city of Nakhchivan, which makes it possible to build an underground gas storage facility.
Creation of an underground gas storage facility in the NAR is necessary to meet the needs of the autonomous republic in gas and to strengthen its energy security.
There are two underground gas storage facilities in Azerbaijan - Kalmaz and Garadagh.
