Azerbaijan, Baku, Oct.22 / Trend, E.Ismayilov /

Specialists of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) are studying opportunities to build an underground gas storage facility in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan, a source at SOCAR told Trend on Monday.

The source said opportunities to build an underground gas storage facility were considered earlier resulting in various project work being conducted.

"Now the work has become more active and SOCAR specialists work over this project," the source said.

As SOCAR president Rovnag Abdullayev said earlier, SOCAR is conducting geological work in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. Gas storage volumes range from 50 to 200 million cubic meters of gas.

There are underground deposits of salt in Nakhchivan, making it possible to build an underground gas storage facility.

Building an underground gas storage facility in Nakhchivan is necessary to meet the needs of the Autonomous Republic in gas and strengthen its energy security.
There are two underground gas storage facilities in Azerbaijan - Kalmaz and Garadagh.
