Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, Nov. 3 / Trend H. Hasanov /

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov has approved the regulation on licensing the activity in power engineering, an official Turkmen source said today.

The document was adopted in accordance with the law on "Licensing certain types of activity" and to comply with the presidential decree No.10281 "Organizing the licensed activity in Turkmenistan" dated February 27, 2009.

According to the industrial development strategy, the level of power generation in Turkmenistan is expected to reach 35.5 billion kilowatt / hour by 2030. Three more gas turbine combined cycle power stations with a total capacity of 1,122 MW are planned to be built to achieve this goal during this period. The construction of high voltage power lines and substations will be continued. This will reduce electricity losses during transportation.

The energy system will be fully looped by high voltage overhead lines of 500 kV in the future. It is planned to construct Balkanabat-Ashgabat-Mary overhead lines of 500 kV till 2020.

Pakistani media reported earlier citing the Turkmen Ministry of Water and Power that Pakistan is planning to begin exporting 1,000 megawatts of electricity from Turkmenistan through the territory of Afghanistan from 2016. According to the information from Islamabad, the financial package of the project worth $1 billion can be prepared by 2013.

At present, Turkmenistan makes supplies to Afghanistan and Iran. The supplies are made to Turkey through Iranian territory. The opportunities of Kazakhstan's appearance on the market are being examined.
