SOCAR, the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan, plans to start construction of a plant for the production of urea in Georgia by the end of 2013, the head of SOCAR Rovnag Abdullayev informed journalists.

"SOCAR is planning on building two urea plants. One of them is to be located in Sumgait, Azerbaijan and the second in Georgia," Abdullayev said.

Earlier SOCAR intended leading the construction work on similar plants at the same time. However, according to the company's head, the construction of the plant in Azerbaijan is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2013.

"Construction of the second urea plant which will be located in Georgia, will start by the end of 2013," Abdullayev said.

The plants are to be identical in all respects, particularly in terms of production. Total annual capacity of the plants will be between 1.2-1.3 million tons.

For implementation of this project, SOCAR has been doing research in this field over three years. In this regard, the State Oil Company experts have studied the experience of other countries that are already producing urea. In particular, within the preparation stage of the project, SOCAR experts visited Egypt, Iran and also travelled to Amman in Jordan.

Urea is environmentally friendly and the most common form of nitrogen fertiliser.
