Azerbaijan, Baku, Jan. 28 / Trend, E. Ismayilov /

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) is drilling the first well as part of creation of new gas storage facility in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (NAR), a source in SOCAR told Trend on Monday.

According to the source, the well depth currently reaches about 300 meters.

"This is the first well drilled here. Drilling is being carried out to explore and assess the site's potential," the source said.

As the source said, the underground gas storage facility will be established in the area of an underground salt deposit in Nakhchivan.

The source said that after completion of the first well's drilling, work will be launched on the drilling of new wells, which will create conditions for an even more detailed study of the possibilities for the creation of the third underground gas storage facility in Azerbaijan.

At present, there are two underground gas storage facilities- Kalmaz and Garadag in Azerbaijan.

As the head of SOCAR Rovnag Abdullayev said earlier, the drilling department of SOCAR conducts geological work in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. Gas storage volumes range from 50 million to 200 million cubic meters of gas.

The creation of an underground gas storage facility in Nakhchivan is necessary to meet the needs of the autonomous republic in gas and to strengthen its energy security.
