Azerbaijan, Baku, April 4 / Trend A.Taghiyeva /

Japanese company Mitsubishi has won a tender for the construction of the second nuclear power plant (NPP) in the Sinop region in Turkey, "The Lira" newspaper reported on Thursday.

It is reported that Mitsubishi will construct the NPP together with the French company Areva SA, but the operator of the project will be the Japanese company.

Construction of the NPP will begin in 2017, and production of electricity will begin at the Sinop power plant by 2023. The project will cost about $22 billion.

However, in December 2012, Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner Yildiz said that Turkey has excluded Japan from the tender for the construction of the NPP in Sinop, due to insufficiency of the offered project.

Besides Japan, Canada, China and South Korea also participated in the tender.

The first nuclear power plant Akkuyu will be built on the Russian project which envisages the construction of four power units with VVER-1200 reactors. The agreement on the construction of the station was signed in May 2010.

The capacity of each unit will reach 1200 MW, while the total capacity is 4,800 MW. It is assumed that the units will be commissioned in sequence at intervals of one year.
