By Huseyn Hasanov - Trend:

A meeting of Turkmen government in Ashgabat discussed the ongoing work concerning the supply of electricity from this country to Afghanistan, according to the Turkmen government's message.

During the meeting Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted that "Turkmenistan is implementing several projects, as well as the preferential provision of electricity to the Afghan people as part of the existing bilateral agreements".

Power generation is one of the leading sectors of the national economy.

"The head of state stressed that the country's energy policy aims to satisfy the needs of Turkmenistan's industry, agriculture, social sector, and also increase the volume of exports to other countries," according to the message.

Earlier it was reported that the Turkmen side has presented a project that allows a fivefold increase in the volume of exports of Turkmen electricity to Afghanistan. Before the project the electricity was delivered in the amount of up to 325 million kilowatt/hours annually.

The work is underway to increase electricity exports to Iran and Turkey. The possibilities of transporting electricity to Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan and countries of the Caucasus are being considered.

Turkmenistan follows the concept of development of electric power industry until 2020. The concept envisages investment worth over $5 billion.
