The Southern Gas Corridor project is open for Iraq to transport its gas to the European markets, Turkish newspaper Hurriyyet reported with the reference to Azerbaijan's foreign minister Elmar Mammadyarov.

"It's a huge project ... and it's open if Iraq is also interested in delivering their own natural gas," Mammadyarov said at a joint news conference with his Iraqi counterpart Hoshyar Zebari on Monday Baghdad.

Officials in Baghdad had already expressed interest in joining the massive project, according to the minister, Hurriyyet reported with the reference to Agence France Presse.

"The project is there, so if any other countries ... want to join the Southern Gas Corridor, including Iraq, who already expressed some interest in this project, we are ready to start negotiations," the minister added.

The Southern Gas Corridor is a project that will allow Europe to diversify its sources of hydrocarbon supply and strengthen energy security and for Azerbaijan to get a new market in Europe.

Gas to be produced as part of the Shah Deniz-2 project is considered as the main source for the Southern Gas Corridor.
