The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) is completing the drilling of a new well at Garadagh underground gas storage facility as part of increasing the capacity of underground gas storage facilities, a source at the state oil company told Trend March 28.

There are two underground gas storage facilities in Azerbaijan - Kalmaz and Garadagh.

"Currently work on completing the drilling of a well at Garadagh gas storage facility is underway simultaneously with preparations for beginning the drilling of a new well," the source said.

Moreover, the drilling of a new well at Kalmaz underground gas storage facility will be completed in the near future, according to the source at SOCAR.

"The drilling of new wells is important from the viewpoint of increasing the capacity of gas storage in the country," the source said.

It is planned to drill over 20 new wells within several years in order to increase the gas pumping and storage volume at underground gas storage facilities.

Currently, gas storage facilities are capable of storing over 3.5 billion cubic meters of gas.
