The work on the assessment of the environmental impact as part of the construction of a new cogeneration plant for Turkey's Petkim petrochemical complex has been completed, a message from the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) said on Jan.27.

SOCAR has a 61.32-percent share in the Petkim petrochemical complex.

Currently, gas is used as a raw material for meeting Petkim's demands for electricity and thermal energy, said the message.

In order to reduce the cost of this process, a cogeneration plant (Petkojen), which will operate on cheaper imported coal, is under construction, according to SOCAR's message.

Currently, the work on licensing the process of electricity production is underway, said the message.

SOCAR Turkey Enerji A.S and SOCAR International DMCC OGG acquired a 10.32 percent stake in Petkim on March 30, 2012, increasing SOCAR's stake in the company to 61.32 percent. Some 38.67 percent is in free circulation on the Istanbul Stock Exchange.

Petkim Petrokimya Holding manufactures plastic packaging, fabric, PVC and detergents being the only Turkish producer of such products. The holding exports a quarter of its products.
