The construction of the first gas-filling station under the brand name of Azerbaijani State Oil Company (SOCAR) is close to completion in Baku, a source at SOCAR told Trend on Feb.13.

The construction work will be completed after a month, according to the source.

As part of the preparations for holding the First European Games, a batch of buses running on gas has been delivered to Baku, said the source. "In this connection, SOCAR is constructing the first gas-filling station in a bus fleet where these buses will be served."

The number of the gas-filling stations will be increased by late 2015, according to the source. "However, it is difficult to specify the number, since it depends on demand."

The source added that vehicles will be fueled with compressed natural gas (CNG) at these stations.

CNG is used as engine fuel instead of gasoline, diesel fuel and propane. It is cheaper than the traditional fuel and safer for the environment. CNG is produced by compressing the natural gas at compressor units.

Currently, SOCAR is engaged in the retail sale of petroleum products through its gas-filling stations in Azerbaijan, Georgia, Ukraine, Romania and Switzerland.

Currently, 16 gas-filling stations of SOCAR operate in the country.
