The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) intends to take part in the project for construction of gas storage in Georgia, a source in SOCAR told Trend.

"Georgian government plans to construct a gas storage in the country and SOCAR has a desire to participate in this project," said the source.

The source added that currently, the feasibility study of a new field for the future gas storage is under development.

"Georgian government has already held preliminary negotiations with us," said the source at SOCAR. "The Georgian side regards us as a desirable partner in this project and we have a positive attitude to this."

The source said that Georgian government has announced a tender for working out the feasibility study of the project for construction of gas storage.

"We plan to directly join this project in one of the next stages," said the source.

Moreover, the source said that the volume of one of the domes of Samgori field considered for the construction of gas storage is less than that of Ninotsminda field that was considered for this purpose before.

Earlier, Georgian Energy Minister Kakha Kaladze said that SOCAR is holding negotiations with Georgian government on participation in the project for construction of gas storage with the capacity of 250 million cubic meters in this country.

SOCAR exported 2.15 billion cubic meters of gas to Georgia in 2014, which is by 248.1 million cubic meters (10.5 percent) more than in 2013.
