Donald Tusk, the president of the European Council, underlined that the EU is looking forward to deepening the EU-Azerbaijan relations further through negotiations on a new bilateral agreement as part of the summits in Baku during his visit to Azerbaijan, spokesperson for the EU Foreign Affairs Council Susanne Kiefer said in an interview with Trend July 31.

Donald Tusk, the president of the European Council, underlined that the EU is looking forward to deepening the EU-Azerbaijan relations further through negotiations on a new bilateral agreement as part of the summits in Baku during his visit to Azerbaijan, spokesperson for the EU Foreign Affairs Council Susanne Kiefer said in an interview with Trend July 31.

Tusk highlighted the importance of working together, including in the field of energy where Azerbaijan is the EU's main partner in diversifying its gas supplies, Kiefer said.

"During the visit, Tusk discussed how to expand commercial relations further in the coming years," she said. "For this, good governance and rule of law are important."

At the same time, Tusk stressed the high importance the EU attaches to human rights and fundamental freedoms.

"The EU believes that an open society is the best guarantee of long term stability and prosperity," she said.

Tusk visited the South Caucasus on July 20-22, Azerbaijan on July 21.
