Work on part of the third phase of developing the Galkynysh field, one of the largest projects in Turkmenistan's gas sector, is scheduled to begin soon.

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov made these remarks at the "Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan" exhibition and conference in Ashgabat on Nov. 17.

"The work will be launched as part of the third phase of developing this field in the coming days," the statement noted. "This once again demonstrates that we are directing the economic potential of our country for the benefit of all mankind."

The total resource reserves of the Galkynysh field and the nearby Yashlar field are estimated at 26.2 trillion cubic meters of gas, according to Gaffney, Cline & Associates (UK), the company that conducted the audit of these two fields.

Currently, Turkmenistan exports its natural gas to China, Iran, and Russia. The Trans-Caspian gas pipeline across the Caspian Sea to Europe through Azerbaijan and the Trans-Afghan gas pipeline to Pakistan through India are among the planned gas pipelines from Turkmenistan.

Under the program for developing the country's oil and gas industry is a plan to increase the gas production volume to 230 billion cubic meters by 2030.

Over 76 billion cubic meters of natural gas were produced in Turkmenistan in 2014, and more than 45 billion cubic meters of this volume were supplied for export.
