Kazakhstan sees growth in coal mining sector

A growth has been observed in Kazakhstan's coal mining sector following the downturn, the Energyprom.kz analytical service said.

The volume of coal and lignite production in monetary terms has increased by 6.8 percent and stood at 51.4 billion tenges (332.51 tenges = $1) in January-March of 2016.

This is while the volume of coal mining has dropped by 7.2 percent and stood at 22.9 million tons and the lignite production decreased by 3.7 percent and totalled 1.1 million tons in the first quarter of 2016.

The domestic companies have almost fully met the demand in this sector as of the first two months of 2016.

The import in the coal segment stood at 0.2 percent in Kazakhstan.

As much as 23.8 percent of the produced hard coal and 58.2 percent of lignite was exported.

Currently, the coal accounts for 66 percent of consumption of energy resources in Kazakhstan, which is higher than in Germany, the US and China.

Kazakhstan plans to reduce this figure to 40 percent by 2040.
