Turkmenistan, Iran developing transport and energy partnership

Turkmen Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov and Iran’s Minister of Roads and Urban Development Abbas Ahmad Akhondi discussed prospects for cooperation in transport and logistics sector during the meeting in Ashgabat, the Turkmen Foreign Ministry said in a message Nov. 15.

According to the message, the sides expressed the need to expand regional transport networks and put forward a number of proposals for their further development.

Moreover, the sides exchanged views on the possibility of intensifying partnership in the energy sector.

During the meeting, the role of the intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation was stressed. Iran is the third most important foreign trade partner of Turkmenistan.

Turkmenistan supplies oil products, gas, electricity and textile goods to Iran.

Iran supplies vegetables, fruits, building materials, ferrous and non-ferrous metal products, plastics, ceramics and vehicles to Turkmenistan.

The strengthening of cooperation with Iran can help expand export of Turkmen goods to many other countries through the Persian Gulf terminals, as well as through pipeline, railway infrastructure and power transmission lines.
