Uzbekistan to finish $1.2B energy project in late 2019

The first power unit of the Turakurgan thermal power plant (TPP) in the Namangan region of Uzbekistan will be put into operation in December 2019, the Uzbek media reported.

According to the information, commissioning of the second power unit (450 megawatts each) and the power plant's output to full capacity are planned for March 2020. The TPP is planned to generate up to 7 billion kWh of electricity per year.

Earlier, the international consortium of Japanese Mitsubishi Corporation and Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Ltd signed a contract with JSC "Uzbekenergo" on construction of two power units of Turakurgan TPP in 2016. The contract amounted to $749.43 million, total cost of the project - up to $1.2 billion.

The Turkish Calik Enerji Sanayi ve Ticaret AS is the partner of the consortium in construction of certain components.

The project is financed by the $704-million loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), a $300-million loan from the Fund for Reconstruction and Development of Uzbekistan and by own funds of "Uzbekenergo".
