New water conduit commissioned in Turkmenistan

A 15-kilometer-long Khivaabad-Kaahka waterway was commissioned in Kaakhkin region of Turkmenistan, local media reported on April 18.

Representatives of the Agriculture and Water Resources Ministry of, Turkmenistan the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the governors of regions, and public organizations took part in the ceremony.

The hydraulic system was built by the UAE-based Dew General Trading and local business entity Galkan with the assistance of UNDP using energy-saving and environmentally friendly technologies.

The system will allow to regulate water distribution in three directions, including agriculture, drinking and household consumption.

Reportedly, more than 14,000 cubic meters of water (165 liters per second) from the Laiynsuv River will flow daily through the waterway to the local water supply system.

Participants of the event noted that the effective use of water resources is a key direction of Turkmenistan's state policy linked with the tasks set by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on development of the agro-industrial complex, environmental protection and uninterrupted supply of clean, drinking water to the population.

Preservation and restoration of the water and other natural resources, fighting desertification, land degradation, climate change are among of Turkmenistan's international cooperation. The country is the initiator of constructive solutions to global environmental problems for the well-being of current and future generations.

Dozens of programs and projects are realized at the national and regional levels together with the UN Development Program, the UN Environment Program, the Global Environment Fund and other authoritative structures.

In this regard, United Nations Resident Coordinator/Resident Representative for UNDP and UNFP Elena Panova highly appreciated the level of fruitful partnership with Turkmenistan, stressing that Turkmenistan is a resource-rich country and it is important to use the recources rationally to save for future generations.
