Kazakhstan can export gas to northern Iran if differences between the Islamic Republic and Turkmenistan regarding debt and gas prices are not resolved in the near future, Chief Researcher of the Institute of Economics of Kazakhstan, Consultant of the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan, expert Oleg Yegorov told Trend.

"Currently, the transportation of Kazakh gas to Iran through the Caspian Sea is difficult due to the absence of a liquefied gas production plant in the country, but if the project of gas supply to Iran, as well as to other countries by sea will be sufficiently relevant, the construction of such a plant is quite real," Yegorov said.

He also noted that Iran is not currently dependent on gas imports, having sufficient reserves of natural gas in its southern fields, but the purchase of gas is a benefit from the logistical point of view, as the transportation of gas from southern to northern Iran requires serious efforts and improved infrastructure.

Iran received Turkmen gas through several routes, the main of which is the Korpeje-Kurt-Kui gas pipeline, which was put into operation in December 1995. In 2010, an additional gas pipeline was opened on the Dovletabad-Serakhs-Khangeran route.

Since January 1, 2017, Turkmenistan limited the supply of natural gas to Iran because of debts.

In December 2017, the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov instructed to prepare documents for the appeal to the International Arbitration Court, within which it was necessary to discuss the issue of Iran's existing significant debt for the payment for the supplied Turkmen natural gas. During the meetings and negotiations held with the representatives of the Iranian side, it was not possible to reach a consensus on the problem.
