By Rufiz Hafizoglu - Trend:

Licenses have been issued for the construction of 86 wind farms in Turkey, Turkey's Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK) told Trend on Dec. 13.

The issuance of licenses for the construction of 84 more wind farms is also being considered, the EPDK said.

"Presently, 238 wind farms are operating in Turkey, which generate 6.8 megawatts of electricity," the EPDK said.

The EPDK noted that 8 percent of the electricity produced in Turkey account for the wind farms.

Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources had earlier said that Turkey plans to invest $1 billion in the development of renewable energy sources.

The construction of new power plants will strengthen Turkey's energy security and reduce its dependence on other countries, according to the Ministry.

The new project on the development of renewable energy sources will provide jobs for about 3,750 people.
