Turkmenistan building up electricity production for export

The biggest power plant in Turkmenistan in the city of Mary generated over 2.45 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in the first quarter of this year, Trend reports with reference to the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper.

The volume of the generated electricity exceeded the planned amount.

It is expected that 10 billion kilowatt-hours will be produced by the end of the year.

Over the past few years, the amount of electricity generated at this plant has more than doubled, according to the report.

In September 2018, an additional combined-cycle gas and steam unit with a capacity of 1,574 megawatts was commissioned on the territory of the Mary power plant.

The project was implemented by the company Calik Enerji with the participation of the US General Electric. It is expected that the project will allow ensuring the growing energy consumption in Turkmenistan and increase the export of electricity, which is being sold to Afghanistan and Iran. The markets of Pakistan, the Caucasus and Central Asia are also being explored. The total capacity of power plants of Turkmenistan exceeds 5,000 megawatts.
