Uzbekneftegaz intends to select a contractor for the modernization of the Bukhara refinery until the end of 2019, Trend reports via Uzbek media.

"Nowadays, we are working with several companies in the direction of upgrading the Bukhara refinery. A feasibility study is being prepared jointly with South Korean partners. In the future, we plan to decide on the company that will implement the engineering part. We hope that after all the calculations are completed we will determine the contractor for the refinery modernization by the end of the year. The refinery is not supposed to be transferred to the trust management," head of the department for the development of advanced processing of hydrocarbons of Uzbekneftegaz, Alisher Bahadir said during a press conference in Tashkent.

The decision to modernize the plant was made after the suspension of the construction of the Jizzakh oil refinery due to the revision of the project concept.

Moreover, the feasibility study of the modernization of the Bukhara refinery was developed in 2013-2014.

The plant was built in 1997 by a consortium led by Technip company (France). Today, the company produces about 10 types of products.

In late April 2019, South Korean media reported that South Korean SK Engineering & Construction signed a contract with Uzbekneftegaz for the modernization of the Bukhara refinery.

The total value of the contract is $600 million.

After modernization, it is planned that the plant will become the first enterprise in Central Asia that produces environmentally friendly petroleum products.

In particular, South Korean technology will bring the product quality up to the standard "Euro 5", and the daily production capacity - up to 50,000 barrels.
