Uzatom and Atomstroyexport, part of the engineering division of Rosatom, the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation, have entered into a contract to carry out engineering surveys at the nuclear power plant (NPP) construction site in Uzbekistan, Trend reports with reference to the Uzatom press service.

The contract was signed on May 17 at the international exhibition Power Uzbekistan.

Director of the NPP Construction Directorate in Uzbekistan Otabek Amanov and a Deputy Director for promising projects of Atomstroyexport Dmitry Ashanin signed the contract.

“This document is one of the key ones in the framework of the nuclear power plant construction project in Uzbekistan. It will allow starting exploration work at the construction site of the future plant,” Amanov said.

The data received by the Russian company will form the basis for the further development of the detailed technical design of NPP.

The day before, the Director-General of the Uzatom Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov said that Uzbekistan will use Russian rules and regulations to speed up the construction of the nuclear power plant.

Uzbekistan plans to begin construction of NPP in 2022. The project will be financed at the expense of own funds of Uzbekistan and by the state loan of Russia. The plant will consist of two VVER-1200 “3+” generation units with a capacity of 1200 MW each that meet all the safety requirements of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

After the NPP commissioning, Uzbekistan will be able to reduce carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere to 14 million tons and nitrogen oxides to 36,000 tons.

As a result , Uzbekistan will annually save 3.7 billion cubic meters of natural gas. Even if exporting the saved gas without processing it, the country will gain $550-$600 million a year.
