Major oil company to clean up oil-contaminated soils in Kazakhstan

National Company "KazMunayGas" and the Ministry of ecology, geology and natural resources of Kazakhstan have signed a memorandum on cooperation in field of environmental protection, Trend reports with reference to the press office of the company.

The memorandum was signed by Chairman of the Management Board of JSC KazMunayGas Alik Aidarbayev and Minister of ecology, geology and natural resources Magzum Mirzagaliyev.

“The memorandum was signed in order to improve the quality of environment, to provide for environmental security and cooperation expansion,” the report said.

According to the memorandum, the subsidiary companies of KazMunayGas take responsibility of cleaning up oil-contaminated soils within the territory named by the contract and of waste management.

The use of oil field in Mangystau region began in previous century, which led to large-scale oil-contaminated soils. In accordance to the memorandum, KazMunayGas in cooperation with subsidiary companies is to meet the environmental requirements and standards, carry out the inventory of waste, attract latest methods and environmentally friendly technologies, as well as to provide for further use of recycled goods in economic activities.

In turn, the Ministry is to monitor if the requirements of environmental legislation are met and to coordinate the implementation of the activities to decrease the negative impact on the environment. Magzum Mirzagaliyev noted that this is the first time in Kazakhstan when a company is taking on the responsibilities at such a large scale.

National Company "KazMunayGas" is Kazakhstan's national operator for exploration, production, refining and transportation of hydrocarbons, representing the state in Kazakhstan's petroleum sector.
