The Russian state atomic energy corporation Rosatom plans to begin construction of a nuclear power plant (NPP) in Uzbekistan in early 2020, Trend reports citing Russian media.

Director General of Rosatom Alexey Likhachev announced this during the opening ceremony of the first foreign branch of the Russian National Research Nuclear University based at the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute, on the basis of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan in Tashkent.

"Our main task is to enter the site at the beginning of next year, as soon as we will have a contract and basic joint decisions both in terms of financing and in the stages of project implementation are made," Likhachev told reporters, answering a question about the progress of the project.

The general director of Rosatom said that since the signing of the agreement on the construction of the nuclear power plant, the parties have gathered all necessary information to reflect the future station and its parameters in the contract documents.

“By the end of the year, we plan to reach the top contract level. A dialogue has also begun between the Ministries of Finance of the two countries on financial issues under the loan agreement,” Likhachev added.

In early September 2018, Russia and Uzbekistan signed an agreement on cooperation in the construction of NPPs. Rosatom plans to build a complex of two 3+ generation units with VVER-1200 reactor units. The site near Tuzkan Lake in the Jizzakh region of Uzbekistan was chosen as the priority site for the construction of the station.
