Japan, Uzbekistan may implement joint energy project

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Nov. 21

By Fakhri Vakilov - Trend:

Japan and Uzbekistan can implement a project to generate electricity on coal, as was stated at a meeting of Uzbekistan’s Minister of Energy Alisher Sultanov with the Ambassador of Japan to the country Yoshinori Fujiyama, Trend reports citing the press service of Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Energy.

The meeting was organized in preparation for the upcoming visit of Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to Japan in December.

The talks were attended by representatives of Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

As was noted during the meeting, Japan is a strategic partner for Uzbekistan, which for many years has supported the country in introducing the most advanced technologies into practice.

The parties discussed ways to expand cooperation in the energy, oil and gas, chemical and other sectors of the economy.

The Japanese side supported Ministry of Energy’s initiatives on investment projects planned for implementation together with Japanese companies.

To date, in Uzbekistan’s electric power sector, projects for the construction of a combined-cycle plant of Navoi TPP and the construction of the Turakurgan TPP have been successfully implemented with the financial support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Assuming that 57 billion kW/h of the annual electricity generation in the country of 65 billion kW/h, is generated at thermal plants, the contribution of thermal power plants with combined-cycle plants built with the support of JICA will be about 20-25 percent of the total generation of thermal power plants.

Currently, cooperation is ongoing within the framework of the project “Construction of the third combined cycle plant at the Navoi TPP” with a capacity of at least 600 MW. The issue of financing the construction of the fourth combined cycle power plant of Navoi TPP is also being studied.

Cooperation with Japanese companies in the oil and gas field is developing as well. In particular, Uzbekistan’s Uzbekneftegaz JSC oil and gas company, together with Mitsubishi Corporation, is studying the issue of monoethylene glycol production from natural gas obtained by utilizing associated flares and flare gases.

In addition, a memorandum of understanding was concluded with Yokogawa Corporation in the field of automation of Uzbekneftegaz JSC’s process control systems.
