Georgia increases pace of HPP construction

BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 6

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Since the beginning of the year, 11 new small and medium-sized hydroelectric power plats (HPPs) have begun to operate in Georgia, said Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia Natia Turnava, Trend reports citing Georgian media outlets.

According to her, investments in these HPPs amounted to $200 million.

"We found the right balance, which should correspond to the interests of the population and the investors for the construction of HPPs. The pace of construction of HPPs in Georgia is growing," Turnava said.

The minister noted that the government has already approved a contract for the construction of Namahvani and Tvishi HPPs on the Rioni River with a total installed capacity of 435 MW.

"We believe that at the beginning of the next year, taking into account all international standards, a building permit will be obtained and construction will begin," Turnava said.

According to the minister, the government will continue to develop alternative energy sources, including the construction of wind power stations.
