Shell-Qatar Petroleum joint venture to supply LNG to Kuwait

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb.10

By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

The joint venture between Qatar Petroleum and Shell will be supplying liquefied natural gas to Kuwait under a new agreement, Trend reports citing Qatargas.

Qatargas announced the signing of a new, long term Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Sale and Purchase Agreement (SPA) with Shell to deliver 1 million tons per annum of LNG to the State of Kuwait, commencing this year.

The SPA provides for the supply of LNG from Qatar Liquefied Gas Company Limited (Qatargas 4), a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum (70 percent) and Shell (30 percent).

Qatar is the largest exporter of LNG in the world. The country’s LNG exports stood at 104.8 billion cubic metres (bcm) in 2018, according to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2019.

Qatargas is the world’s largest LNG producing company. The company produces approximately 18.5 billion standard cubic feet per day (bscfd) of sour gas from a total of 208 wells and then supplies to 14 LNG trains and four sales gas trains onshore. The gas, along with the associated condensate, is then transferred via subsea pipelines to shore.

Qatargas also operates the North Field Bravo (NFB) and RasGas Alfa (RGA) offshore complexes which account for nearly 2.8bscfd of dry gas to its total offshore gas production.

Kuwait, which is rich in oil but falls short in gas production, is currently importing 2.5 million tonnes of LNG per year from BP, Shell and Qatar Petroleum. Kuwait uses natural gas imports for power generation and petrochemicals industry.
