The Uzbek delegation headed by Energy Minister Alisher Sultanov met with IAEA General Director Rafael Mariano Grossi, Trend reports citing the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan.

The meeting was held as part of the International Conference on Nuclear Security from February 10 through February 14, at the organization's headquarters in Vienna.

"Issues of further expansion of cooperation were discussed during the meeting. Grossi praised the ongoing reforms and the intensification of Uzbekistan's work with the IAEA. He noted that the IAEA sees Uzbekistan as an important partner in the region," the press service of the Uzbek Energy Ministry said.

Also, IAEA expressed its readiness to provide all possible assistance and support in the field of nuclear safety and in the implementation of a large-scale project - the construction of a nuclear power plant, as well as the IAEA mission for 2020 on integrated review of nuclear infrastructure.

One of the IAEA Integrated Regulatory Review Services (IRRS) missions, which will make it possible to implement Uzbekistan's national program in full compliance with international rules, has a significant role to play in this regard.

For the period 2020-2021, as part of its technical cooperation program, IAEA approved four projects worth more than one million euros for implementation in Uzbekistan, the press service of the Ministry of Energy reports.

The program provides for strengthening nuclear and radiation safety in the operation of nuclear energy facilities in Uzbekistan, development and introduction of modern nuclear technologies in medicine and other sectors of the economy, as well as dissemination of knowledge about nuclear energy.
