Azerbaijan increases volume of household  waste used in alternative energy

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 7

Some 26.8 percent of household solid waste was used for obtaining energy in Azerbaijan in 2019, Trend reports with reference to the country’s State Statistical Committee on May 7.

Last year, 72.9 percent of municipal solid waste was removed to landfills for neutralizing them, while 0.3 percent of them sold domestically.

According to the committee, through the utilization of household solid waste, 195.9 million kilowatt-hours were generated, which is 20.8 percent more compared to 2018.

In industry and other sectors of the economy, 28.3 percent of the generated industrial waste was used as raw materials at enterprises, 9.9 percent was sold domestically, 3 percent was exported, 14 percent was removed to landfills for neutralization, and 44.8 percent remained at the enterprises.

Through the use of household solid waste in 2018, 162.2 million kilowatt-hours of electricity was generated, which makes up 51 percent of the electricity generated in 2018 in the field of alternative energy.
