By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

Transportation of gas across the Caspian Sea is possible even without the construction of the Trans Caspian Pipeline, Elshad Nassirov, Vice-president for investments and marketing at Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR said, Trend reports.

“Over the last two years we transported almost 5 million tons of oil through Azerbaijan to the world markets and that means the the Trans Caspian energy corridor already exists. Before the sanctions, we were engaged in transportation of Turkmen gas across Iran to Azerbaijan and Georgia. Even without the construction of the Trans Caspian Pipeline, transportation of gas across the Caspian is possible. With the signing of the Convention on the Status of the Caspian Sea and completion of the Southern Gas Corridor, there is nothing which can stop the transportation of Caspian hydrocarbons to Europe,” he said during the discussions on Impact of COVID-19 on Energy Sector organized by the Caspian Policy Center.

He pointed out that despite the COVID-19 pandemic and doubts that companies in the south of Italy will not be able to construct the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) on the Italian coast and to connect Albanian and Italian coasts in time, the pipeline will be ready and operational in time in October or November this year.

As for SOCAR’s cooperation with Central Asian countries, Nassirov noted that SOCAR and BP are in negotiations with Uzbekneftegaz on exploration and possible production.

“We have proposed Turkmenistan to open SOCAR office in Ashgabat in order to enable day-to-day cooperation with our Turkmen colleagues in oil and gas industry. We’re importing oil products and raw material from Turkmenistan. We’re refining raw materials imported from Turkmenistan in Baku Refinery and taking jet fuel produced from Turkmenistan’s raw material to Europe and Afghanistan again,” he explained.
