Bulgarian gas imports from Azerbaijan may be increased after 2025

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Aug.3

By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

Bulgarian gas imports from Azerbaijan may be increased after 2025 when more Azerbaijani gas becomes available to EU customers via the second phase of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), Trend reports with reference to the the book titled “The Southern Gas Corridor and its importance for South-East Europe”.

The authors believes that for a second phase to exist, namely the expansion of its capacity to 5 bcm/y, IGB needs to carry regasified LNG volumes from the Alexandroupolis FSRU project if it materializes or wait for post-Shah Deniz 2 gas from (most likely) Azerbaijan.

“The long-term future of these two projects is clearly intertwined, although IGB will be built on a stand-alone basis, simply to connect Bulgaria to TAP,” reads the book.

IGB project envisages the construction of a gas interconnector that will link the gas transmission systems of Greece and Bulgaria. The total length of the gas pipeline is 182.6 km, and its capacity for gas transmission is 3 billion cubic meters per year with the option to reach 5 billion cubic meters.

The route of the gas pipeline is divided into 7 main lots, the shortest being 9.55 km long and the longest - 71.90 km. 106 km of the route in Bulgaria will be completed with automatic welding, and the remaining 45 km - by manual welding.

The process of automatic welding of the pipes as part of the Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB) has already started, which will speed up the realization of the interconnector.

Over 45 km of stringing on the route is completed, and the process continues both on Bulgarian and Greek territory. Two types of welding activities are performed for the purposes of the IGB project - manual and automatic. Over 10 km of the route is welded, and non-destructive control of the welds is being performed.
