Azerbaijan sees growth in alternative energy production

Electricity generation at thermal power plants (TPPs) of Azerbaijan from January through July 2020 rose by 381.5 million kilowatt-hours compared to the same period of 2019 and exceeded 14.3 billion kilowatt-hours, Trend reports citing the Ministry of Energy.

According to the ministry's report, electricity generation at hydroelectric power plants (HPPs) made up 774.5 million kilowatt-hours, having dropped by 277.4 million kilowatt-hours compared to the same period of last year.

The indicator for other energy sources (wind power stations, solar power stations and household solid waste incinerator) made up 213,500 kilowatt-hours, down by 8.1 million kilowatt-hours.

Meanwhile, 63 million kilowatt-hours of electricity were generated at wind power stations, 28 million kilowatt-hours at solar power stations, and 122.5 million kilowatt-hours at household solid waste incinerator.

Electricity generation by Azerenerji OJSC surpassed 13.7 billion kilowatt-hours in the first seven months of 2020; 13 billion kilowatt-hours were generated at TPPs, and 640.1 million kilowatt-hours – at HPPs.

The State Energy Service of Azerbaijan's Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic generated 243.6 million kilowatt-hours. Meanwhile, 98.6 million kilowatt-hours were generated at TPPs, 120.9 million kilowatt-hours - at HPPs, 24.1 million kilowatt-hours - at solar power stations, and 1.3 billion kilowatt-hours - at other power plants.

In the reporting period, Azerbaijan’s electricity export amounted to 731.8 million kilowatt-hours, which is 43.3 million kilowatt-hours less compared to the same period of 2019. In turn, electricity import decreased by 6.4 million kilowatt-hours, compared to the same period of last year, amounting to 87.4 million kilowatt-hours.
