COVID-19 requires more green projects, says EU

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Oct.28

By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

The COVID-19 pandemic sets a new challenge for the transition to green economy, Trend quoted Cristina Lobillo Borrero, Director of Energy Policy, Directorate-General for Energy, European Commission, as saying.

She made the remarks during the Baku International Energy Charter Forum “Transition to renewables in power generation, transport, heating and cooling: modern challenges and trends”.

Borrero noted that the situation that was before the pandemic will no longer exist: “In the current conditions, the need for green projects in the interests of Europe and the world economy is increasing. The EU energy policy aims to increase the share of renewables in our energy production to 75 percent. And we are focusing on the transition in our energy production to decarbonization. It is also important to have new tools, new jobs for the competitiveness of our economy. All this will affect our energy security. A secure energy system means the development of the energy sector in transport, industry, etc. And this means we need to integrate the supply and demand of energy products using smart technologies through planning and through integrated decision making. New opportunities are opening up to accelerate the economy's transition from hydrocarbons. In Europe, we intend to switch to renewable sources by 2050. For this, the European commission at the beginning of the year proposed to cut emissions in this area at least by 55 percent by 2030. This requires from the EU 35 billion euros in additional funds compared to what it was before,” she said.
