Azerbaijan's Ministry of Energy talks consumer role in renewable energy sector

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec. 10

By Fidan Babayeva – Trend:

One of the important innovations in the development of the renewable energy sector in Azerbaijan is to support the participation of citizens in this process as active consumers, Jahid Mikayilov, Spokesman for the Azerbaijani Ministry of Energy, told Trend.

According to Mikayilov, the introduction of an active support mechanism will allow consumers to generate electricity for their own needs through the device of renewable energy sources of a certain capacity and to transfer excess electricity to the distribution network.

"The key moment for the transition of all these processes into an active phase is the adoption of a proper law. The creation of the State Agency for Renewable Energy Sources under the Ministry of Energy by a corresponding presidential decree was also caused by the need to develop this area," the spokesman stressed.

He noted that the main task of the agency is to make this sphere attractive for investors and non-financial burden for the state.

“Created on the basis of requirements for efficiency, flexibility and modern development, the agency will coordinate the processes related to the renewable energy sector and contribute to the new energy development strategy. As can be seen from its charter, the agency's activities are multifaceted. Ensuring the investment attractiveness of this sector, the implementation of renewable energy projects under a contract for the purchase of electricity, the creation of appropriate funds to ensure and support the efficient use of renewables are completely new areas of activity,” added Mikayilov.

Azerbaijan is one of the leading energy centers in the region. In the first 10 months of 2020, Azerbaijan generated 20.8 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, which is 4.8 percent more compared to 10 months of 2019.

Of these, 922.4 million kilowatt-hours are accounted for by the production of hydroelectric power plants, which is 33.1 percent less compared to a year earlier.

Of these, 19.13 billion kilowatt-hours fell on the production of thermal power plants, which is 8.2 percent more compared to the first 10 months of 2019.
