Foundation of new propylene plant laid in Iran

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb. 7

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

The foundation of a plant for the production of propylene from natural gas has been laid in the Eslamabad e-Gharb County of Kermanshah Province (western Iran) for the first time, Trend reports citing National Petrochemical Company of Iran’s website.

Iranian Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri, Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh, Director of the National Petrochemical Company Behzad Mohammadi, and other officials attended the event dedicated to the laying of the foundation of the plant.

The Eslamabad e-Gharb plant will be built on 54 hectares of land with an investment of $545 million.

The plant will be supplied with fuel through the Asaluyeh gas pipeline and the Ilam Gas Refinery in Iran's Bushehr Province (southern Iran). Daily 2.1 million cubic meters of natural gas will be transported to the plant.

The plant will produce 960,000 tons of raw materials a year in three stages. Annually 660,000 tons of methanol will be produced from these raw materials. As a result, 120,000 tons of polypropylene will be produced annually from methanol.

As reported, a number of plans are being implemented in Iran to increase polypropylene production. Iran currently produces 950,000 tons of polypropylene. Once the plans are fully implemented, Iran will produce about 4.5 million tons of polypropylene per year.
