Georgia should accelerate process of construction of HPP - Former Minister of Energy

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb. 8

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Georgia should accelerate the process of construction of hydroelectric power plants and develop renewable energy sources, said Former Minister of Energy of Georgia David Mirtskhulava, Trend reports via Georgian media.

"We are talking about the construction of three more reservoirs:" Nenskra "," Namakhvani "and" Khudoni ". I think that the intensification of construction and investment in hydroelectric power plants will be of great importance," Mirtskhulava said.

According to him, in the near future, it is planned to build both solar power plants and a wind power station.

"The development of renewable sources also requires the development of reserve capacities that will smooth out the fluctuations of these stations. Solar energy works in daylight, the wind is also changeable, so we must have a reserve of hydropower," said Mirtskhulava.

In 2020, important energy projects were implemented in Georgia aimed at strengthening the country's energy independence: a hydroelectric station with a total installed capacity of up to 670 megawatts was commissioned or moved to the construction stage. TPP "Gardabani-2" with a capacity of 230 megawatts, equipped with the latest technologies, was put into operation. Also, the expression of interest for the third thermal power plant of the combined cycle with a capacity of 272 megawatts - "Gardabani-3" was completed.

Therefore, the construction of as many hydropower plants as possible is a priority for the Georgian government. After all, one cannot fully rely on alternative energy sources. Wind farms cannot replace hydropower 100 percent. These plants have problems with stability and generation.
