Iran resumes talks with Turkmenistan over electricity imports

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb.8

Trend:

Iran has resumed negotiations with Turkmenistan to import considering the amount of electricity, said Iran Minister of Energy.

"We have resumed negotiations with this country and considering the pause in import, it has been agreed that a considerable amount of electricity would be imported from Turkmenistan," said Reza Ardakanian, Trend reports citing ILNA.

Resumed power imports from Turkmenistan come as Iran has recently faced rising power and gas consumption in the household and commercial sectors during winter that even caused a power outage.

"Total of 17,338-megawatt power production capacity has been created from 2013 until current Iranian year (started March 20, 2020)," he said.

"The government has transmitted electricity to 2,960 villages during the past seven and a half years. The required gas for the power plant sector is currently being distributed by the National Iranian Gas Company and there would be no limitation for industries in this regard since February 4. The household sector should also reduce gas consumption otherwise the oil ministry would face limitations," he added.

Ardakanian went on today that if the gas is provided we would have a chance to save diesel to use in the north of the country during cold temperature situations in case there is a problem in gas transmission.
