Turkey, Georgia eye simplification of operations for electricity import and export

An additional protocol to the energy cooperation agreement was signed between Georgia and Turkey, the Georgian Embassy in Turkey said, Trend reports via Georgian media.

On behalf of the Georgian Electricity Market Operator (ESCO), the document was signed by the Ambassador of Georgia Georgy Janjgava and the Executive Director of the Turkish Electricity Corporation (EÜAŞ) Izzet Alagez.

The protocol provides for the simplification of operations for the import and export of electricity between the two countries.

Georgia purchased 827.8 million kilowatt-hours of electricity in the first two months of 2021, more than 410 million kWh per month.

As reported, the main suppliers are Russia and Azerbaijan. Some 521 million kWh of electricity has been purchased from Russia in 2 months, and 299.7 million from Azerbaijan.

In 2020, Georgia bought the most electricity from Azerbaijan. Georgia purchased 726 million kilowatt-hours of electricity from this country, equal to 45 percent of total imports.
